What is in a Name

The origin of my username, with some references

Updated

  • personal

I've gone by Proziam on the internet for decades. In that time, I have been asked about a million times where my username came from. So, once and for all, here's the answer.

Equilibrium - The Movie

One of my favorite films is Equilibrium. In that film, the drug Prozium chemically eliminates emotions.

If you enjoyed The Matrix trilogy, you'll enjoy this. If you liked that other Matrix movie, I'm terribly sorry for whatever caused your brain injury.

Esports

I spent thousands upon thousands of hours playing or coaching games like Halo, Call of Duty, Starcraft II, and League of Legends. At the time I landed on Proziam as a username, I was playing Starcraft and running an esports organization called Pulse Esports.

I play Zerg.

Game Theory

Given my love of esports, it's probably not much of a surprise that I loved other games as well. I spent a long time playing poker (inspired by Zyos) and in the pursuit of making money playing games I augmented my play with academic topics I found useful.

In poker, math is king. Among the first math-adjacent concepts you'll run into when studying the game will undoubtedly be the Nash Table.

Heads-up push/fold Nash tables showing stack-size thresholds for pushing and calling with each poker starting hand.

Nash Equilibrium

In short, nash equilibrium is the break-even point where nobody gains anything by changing their strategy - until someone else changes theirs. Being aware of how people are playing, and noticing that they are playing a different set of hands than is optimal, is how you find and exploit leaks in your opponents' play.

This all connects back to the movie because the number one way poker players lose money is by letting their emotions control their play (tilt). My aspiration has always been to achieve complete emotional detachment, thereby keeping my play and analysis on point.

Proziam

And finally, when I combined my interests to try to come up with a better username than Gunfreak, [Pro] [Z]erg [I] [Am], is what I landed on. Nobody has ever claimed that I lack self-confidence.

Although none of that mattered to my beloved Xbox Live community who unanimously voted to call me Prozac every chance they get.
